What about a honeybee? Or a mangrove tree?About this EventIn this experimental drawing workshop, we will be making maps of the exhibition, ‘Keystone Species’, from the points of view, or other senses, of different species. Using prompts and props, we will imagine how other species experience spaces, and what this might translate to in terms of mark-making.Your map could combine elements depicted within the artworks and views of the gallery spaces, or it could be totally abstract. For those who prefer, there will be the option to create a map whilst seated. This workshop is a space to explore together, finding our own personal ways of engaging with an art exhibition and describing this experience.The drawings will be added to our ever-evolving collective map and become part of the exhibition (opening March 26th). They can be collected at the end of the exhibition (closing on May 16th). We are also happy to send you a photo or scan of your map after the workshop.Materials will be provided but please feel free to bring your favourite drawing tools. No drawing experience is necessary.This workshop is part of the Keystone Species exhibition at Proposition Bethnal Green, which brings together thirteen artists based in Proposition’s studios whose work engages with the idea of keystone species: those organisms whose presence has a disproportionate influence on the abundance of life in their ecological region.BiosJolene Liam is an artist and architect from Singapore. She is interested in different ways of thinking about the places around us, from everyday and in-between spaces to imagined landscapes. Working in the expanded, experimental field of drawing enables Jolene to find new ways of interrogating space. The ‘in-between’ and the ‘not quite’ are her tools of choice, creating works that sit on the boundaries between drawing, painting and sculpture. Breaking away from the confines of orthographic drawing lets her explore the gaps between conventional methods of representation, mapping things that cannot be measured. Jolene is a resident artist at Proposition Bethnal Green. Her work has been selected and shortlisted for several awards including the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize, Art Gemini Prize, Derwent Art Prize, World Illustration Awards, and Royal Institute of British Architects’ Eye Line Drawing Competition.The workshops will be co-facilitated by Kwame Boakye, the founder of Kwame & Co., a London-based design agency passionate about creating beautiful and engaging digital experiences. Since late 2016, he has been organising community events for the South London Acro Yoga group based on Clapham Common. His most recent initiative has been facilitating reduced price classes and workshops to make the sport safer and more accessible to the community and create opportunities for London-based teachers to reach new audiences.
